About Jiu Jitsu

Overview

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a form of martial art and combat sport that relies on grappling and especially ground fighting.

The main goal of BJJ is to gain a dominant position and using join-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit.  The basis of BJJ is a form of modified version of pre-World War II judo and also some techniques from Japanese Jujutsu.

BJJ promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger opponent.  BJJ can be used in self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi or no gi) and mixed martial arts competition.  Sparring, which is sometimes called rolling, and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

Training methods

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on submissions without the use of strikes.  This allows us to practice at full speed and with full power, without the risk of injury.

Physical conditioning is a very important part of our training.  A typical class has 3 parts:

1 - Warm Up-  Consisting of calisthenics, jogging and stretching.

2- Technique Drilling - We learn and practice various techniques used in Jiu-Jitsu

3- Free Sparing (Rolling) - We use the techniques we have learned against a fully resisting partner so that we can apply our training in a realistic situation.
